Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this review article is to emphasize the contributions of dental articulators as an indispensable tool in the field of prosthodontics. Background: A prosthodontist's arsenal is incomplete without an articulator. The articulator is a mechanical device that mimics the movements of the patient’s jaws. In the absence of the patient, the articulator acts as their replacement. A clinician's quality of work and patient satisfaction can be greatly enhanced with the use of an articulator Review results: In this article, a thorough overview is presented of this instrument, including its purpose, pros, cons, classification, limitations, sterilization and brief note on recent improvements. It overemphasizes the importance of appropriate selection of articulators for specific patient conditions in the field of prosthodontics. Conclusion: The history of articulators from the past to the present has seen a number of types with different levels of complexity. Regardless of design and efficacy, the success of use of articulators in prosthodontics depends on how well the operator understands its features, accuracy in registration and transfer of patient jaw relation records. Clinical Significance: In prosthodontics, understanding the role of articulators, design features of different types of articulators, its appropriate application, and maintenance are critical for a successful restorative treatment.
