The most prevalent type of arthritis is by far osteoarthritis (OA). It is a significant contributor to pain and impairment in the elderly and is closely linked to aging. The symptoms of osteoarthritis include expansion of the afflicted joints, subchondral osteosclerosis, the growth of osteophytes at the joint edge, and localized loss of articular cartilage.
