A Randomized Controlled Trial Evaluating Resorbable vs. Titanium Fixation in Pediatric Facial Fractures

Abstract

Pediatric facial fractures present unique challenges due to ongoing skeletal growth and healing dynamics. This randomized controlled trial evaluates the efficacy and outcomes of resorbable fixation systems versus titanium fixation in managing pediatric facial fractures. The study enrolled X pediatric patients (aged Y-Z years) with isolated facial fractures, randomly allocated into two equal groups: Group A (resorbable fixation) and Group B (titanium fixation). Primary outcomes included postoperative stability, complication rates, and bone healing, assessed at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively using radiographic and clinical parameters. Secondary outcomes included infection rates, hardware failure, and need for revision surgery. Statistical analysis using chi-square tests and ANOVA revealed significantly reduced complications (p < 0.05) in the resorbable group, with comparable stability and healing outcomes to titanium fixation. The study highlights the advantages of resorbable fixation in reducing long-term hardware-related complications without compromising stability, making it a viable alternative for pediatric facial trauma management.
