Background: Anemia is one of the most prevalent diseases in India. Many medical students may suffer from anemia due to their irregular dietary habits and stressful study schedule.Since many of the students are living at hostels, food habits will alter and may lead to deficiency of certain nutrients resulting in anemia. Anemia results in decreased academic performance due to the impact of anemia on physical and mental health. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a total number of 229 medical students were included and was conducted in the Department of General Medicine at a tertiary care hospital, Andhra pradesh, India. Medical students with age group of 17-25 years of both male and female students.Data was collected from the medical students using a study questionnaire.Physical examination was done for any signs of anemia after taking informed consent.Analysis of blood samples was done by Sysmex Automated Hematology Analyzer XN - 10 in the central laboratory of the tertiary care hospital. Results: Data of 229 blood samples were evaluated.This study was done on 229 subjects out of them males were 108 and females were 121.Prevalence of anemia was found to be 25.8% (i.e., 59 out of 229) in a medical college, Eluru.Prevalence of anemia among males was found to be 3.7% (anemic males were 4 out of 108) and that of females was 45.45% (anemic females were 55 out of 121).Relation between severity of anemia and MCV, MCH, MCHC were done using Pearson chi-square test with p value <0.001. Conclusion: Anemia is more prevalent among female than male medical students. Hostellers are more anemic than day scholars.
