Red palm weevil (RPW) Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, known by several names as the Asian palm weevil, is a significant pest of palm trees (Arecaceae) in various agro-ecosystems worldwide. The Gulf Cooperation Council Countries (GCC) identified R. ferrugineus as a threat to date palm production in the mid-1980s. Since then, scientists and growers have used various techniques to manage this destructive pest. Through its 'Rome Declaration,' the UN Food and Agricultural Organization has recently emphasized the critical requirement to control RPW through cooperative efforts and pledges at the national and international levels to stop this disastrous pest's spread. RPW control and eradication have become exceedingly difficult due to gaps and challenges in nearly every aspect of the current RPW-IPM strategy, especially regarding early detection, absence of efficient biological control agents in the field, poor farmer participation in control programs, and the creation and application of phytosanitary measures. This review summarises the worldwide invasion, available management solutions, obstacles to effective control, and future possibilities.
