Abstract

Aim:Therefore, this study evaluated Manihotesculenta treatment in the control of diabetes damage and pancreatic complicati ons using animal models.Method:Diabetes was induced in mice after overnight fast with 150 mg/kg alloxan intraperitoneally. After 72 h, those with plasma glucose levels >200 mg/dl were classified as diabetic. Five diabetic rats in each group were treated daily for 14 days orally with 100, 250, and 500 mg/kg of the extract, and metformin (100 mg/kg) while another group was untreated. Result: The two doses, (250 and 500 mg/kg) of the methanol leaf extract of Manihot esculenta Crantz as well as Metformin produced significant (P<0.05) reduction in the fasting blood glucose levels when compared with the untreated control from day 3 to 14th day of treatment. The fasting blood glucose reduction was dose dependent. 500mg/kg of the extract had the highest reduction in fasting glucose level on the 4th day (101.3 ± 4.91, 77.91%) The reduction was consistent, as the extracts gradually reduce blood glucose level on daily bases
