Abstract: Background: Ageing is an inevitable and irreversible biological process that commences with birth, continues throughout life and ends in death. Globally, the older population forms 9.3 percent of the total population in 2020 and is expected to rise to 16.0 per cent by 2050.Malnutrition is one of the difficult circumstance noticed in elderly age group but often due attention is not given. Objective: To assess the nutritional status and factors related to it of elderly people residing in the rural field practice area. Materials and Methods: A Cross - Sectional study was conducted among the elderly population residing in PeeranwadiSubcentre area, Kinaye PHC field practice area of KLE’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belagavi. Study was conducted from 1 st January 2020 to 31st December 2020.A sample size of 600 was calculated and obtained by systematic random sampling method. Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) was used to find the prevalence of malnutrition. Results: Among the participants, 36.5% were in the age group of 60 - 64 years, more than half (53.3%) were male participants, majority (86.17%) were Hindus, 85.5% were married, one third (34%) had completed primary school, 33.3% were farmers by occupation, nearly half of the participants (49%) belonged to class IV according to Modified B.G. Prasad classification. The prevalence of the malnutrition was found to be 17%, 41.5% were at risk of malnutrition and 41.5% were well nourished. Conclusion and Recomendation: This study showed that the prevalence of malnutrition among elderly population was 17% and there was a high prevalence of at risk of malnutrition 249 (41.2%) and normal nutritional status was seen in 249 (41.5%). Geriatric clinic should be integrated in all Rural Health Center and nutritional status should be regularly assessed.
