The current study demonstrated the heavy metal extraction of Brassica juncea (Indian mustard) from paper industry effluent contaminated soil. The study further investigates the effect of chelators such as EDTA and Citric acid on phytoextraction of Chromium (Cr). The soluble and available heavy metal in the effluent was determined as 2.7 mg/l of Cr by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). To improve the metal solubility of the soil, the test soil was treated with citric acid and EDTA at varying concentrations of 5mM, 6mM and 7mM. After 30 days, the metal uptake in the plant such as shoot and root was examined. The effective translocation of Cr was obtained at all concentrations of citric acid treated plants and it was comparatively low in case of EDTA. The phytotoxicity study has been carried out followed by phytoremediation. The protein content of the plants was found to be greatly increased by citric acid-assisted chelation. Moreover, citric acid-assisted chelation significantly increased Cr uptake in Brassica juncea. Thus, the study concluded that Brassica juncea become the potential heavy metal accumulator and can effectively employed for phytoremediation.
