Chemistry and pharmacology of pulegone and its derivatives.

Abstract

Pulegone (2-isopropylidene-5-methylcyclohexanone) is a monocyclic monoterpenes, ,structurally close to menthol, it is a chiral molecule obtained and identified in several essential oils of variety of plants ,including mint species such as peppermint, pennyroyal ,and spearmint. Pulegone is added to some consumption product, it is used to flavor foods, drinks, toothpastes, and in herbal drugs as aroma agents. Several research have been carried out to investigate the chemistry of pulegone , its bioactivity, and the biological properties of essential oils extracted from plants in which the main constituent is pulegone. Moreover, other studies have used pulegone as an intermediate and chiral key in the synthesis of a variety of novel products. In this study, we concentrated on reviewing these several synthesises of novel derivatives of pulegone, reveal the possibilities for novel compounds with special, efficient modes and targets of action using different reagents and novel techniques, and also mentioning their pharmacological activity. Different studies confirmed that pulegone exhibits insecticidal proprieties. While pulegone has some interesting characteristics, its potential toxicity prevents it from being widely used in certain applications. Hence, this integrated overview surveys and interprets the present knowledge of the chemistry and analysis of this oxygenated monoterpene and also its toxicity and different metabolism and Biotransformation in humans and rodents.
