Abstract

Geomatics provides a method for collecting both spatial and temporal agricultural statistical data, enabling the administration to obtain consistent data without the constraints of field collection. We conducted a comparative study of agricultural land use between 2014 and 2021 using a MOSAIC of 12 Google Earth satellite photos, which supported the determination and extraction of plant cover information in the agriculturally dominant Emdjez Edchich region in the department of Skikda, Algeria. This study is based on computer-assisted photo- interpretation using the Geographic Information System (GIS), supplemented by surveys carried out in the field. The study's results show the spatial temporal variations of changes in agrarian landscapes over seven years. The results indicate a decrease in cereal area from 2757 ha to 2150 ha, as well as in market gardening, which went from 2685 ha to 1858 ha. Pulses and fruit crops, on the other hand, saw an increase in surface area and yield, rising from 180 ha to 200 ha and 131 ha to 341 ha, respectively. This method could provide essential information for decision-makers in the sector to limit urban sprawl in favor of forests and olive groves and establish a strategy for protecting agricultural land.
