Effect of Solvent Polarity on Antioxidant Properties of Anabasis articulata (Forssk.) Moq Extracts, a Wild Plant from Algerian Arid and Semi-Arid Zones

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the in vitro antioxidant of the ethanolic and the fractions of Anabasis articulata: a plant of the Algerian flora of the arid and semi-arid regions belonging to Chenopodiaceae family. Five tests were carried out for the study of the antioxidant activity of the extracts: ABTS and hydrogen peroxide scavenging tests, metal chelating activity,, reducing power test and β-carotene bleaching assay. Finding showed that the n-butanol fraction (nBFA) had the greatest activity in ABTS radical scavenging test with an IC50 of 0.021±0.0007 mg/mL. Chloroform fraction (ChFA) occurred the strongest effect in hydrogen peroxide scavenging activities with an IC50 of 1.777±0.0402 mg/mL. The quantitative evaluation of the chelating ferrous ion showed that the ethanolic extract (EEAA) was the most active with IC50 value of 0.073±0.002mg/mL. In Reducing power, Ethyl Acetate fraction(EAFA) and ChFA with an IC50 of 0.188±0.0008 and 0,314±0.016mg/mL exhibited a best reducing power. However, all extracts showed a good concentration dependent inhibited linoleic acid oxidation. The good antioxidant propriety of several extract of A. articulata can be exploited in the field of pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic industries.
