Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is one of the oldest valuable fruit crops grown in the arid regions of the North Africa, the Arabian Penin sula, and the Middle East. Recent research has shown that dates are a rich source of bioactive compounds and possess many biological activ ities, such as antioxidant, antibacterial, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and anticancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant potential of the methanolic extract of two Algerian semi soft date culti vars (Deglet-Nour and Sot-Elkhil). The research was undertaken to de termine the total phenolics and flavonoids using Folin-Ciocalteu’s and aluminum chloride colorimetric methods. The antioxidant activity was assessed by using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ferric reduc ing/antioxidant power (FRAP) and β-carotene-linoleic acid. The total phenolic content (TPC) of the two studied cultivars was found to be in the range of 15,79-25,22 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/100 g of FW and the total flavonoids content (TFC) ranged from 2,75-3,85 mg quer cetin equivalent (QE)/100 g of FW. Except, the DPPH assay (90.67% and 58.54%), the results showed that the two studied cultivars exerted the same antioxidant capacities for the FRAP (50.82 and 53.89 mg BHAE/100 g ; 19.70 and 20.93 mg GAE/100 g; 38.40 and 40.70 mg QE/100 g; 106.30 and 112.44 mg VitCE/100 g) and β-carotene assay (24.87% and 22.90%). This work highlights the potential of semi soft dates as a good source of natural antioxidants and could potentially be considered as a functional food due to their beneficial effects on human health.
