Abstract

Introduction: In the present work, an experimental hydroponic system was applied to study the effect of hexavalent chromium (K2CrO4) on growth and mineral nutrition of the xero-halophyte *Atriplex halimus*. Objective:To evaluate the impact of different concentrations of chromate potassium (0, 100, 150 and 300µM) on *Atriplex halimus* over a two week period. Results:First, Growth parameters (root and shoot lengths, fresh and dry weights) and mineral content (total chlorophyll, Ca+2, K+ and Fe+) decreased with increasing Cr concentrations. Second, Proline content increased with Cr increment, particularly in the shoot part. Third, at 300 μM K2CrO4 treatment, Cr accumulation was significantly higher in roots (3617.10mg/kg) compared to shoots (355.83 mg/kg). Conclusion:The present findings suggest that *Atriplex halimus* could be used as a potential candidate in phytostabilization of Cr polluted soils.
