Abstract

The drought periods, due to the climate change have a negative impact in Ground water resources. The present investigation was oriented to explore the spatial extent and temporal pattern of historical droughts and their impacts. The monthly rainfall series P (mm) and temperature series T (° C) were the principal recorded parameters during the period from 1987 to 2020. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), the Reconnaissance Drought Index (RDI), Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), were used initially to calculate the annual potential evapotranspiration (PET). This is the mean element to describe the significance of climate events as well as their geographical and temporal variability. According to the results, drought is cyclical in nature and occurs almost every 4 to 5 years. It was noticed that their large difference in the RDI which did not follow a similar SPI trend. Also, it was noted that the SPI and RDI have not the same drought classes in each years at different time scales 3-month and 12-month. Moreover, the SPEI depends on the variation of SPI and ETP. The periods of drought are explained by an insufficiency of the hydrological-dry- meteorological balance, represented by an increase in temperature, ETP and a remarkable decrease in precipitation over the study period.
