Hyponatremia and Raised Cardiac Troponin I in newborns are evocators of severe hypoxic ischemic encepalopathy

Abstract

Introduction- Perinatal asphyxia leading to Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy is a common problem causing multi organ dysfunction including myocardial involvement which can affect the outcome. Cardiac Troponin-I, a marker of myocardial injury, has been shown to be high in asphyxiated neonates as compared to healthy neonates. Moreover, it has also been reported to have an association with adverse outcomes and mortality. Additionally, the serum level of electrolytes especially serum sodium plays a pivotal role in the outcome of these HIE babies. Any deviation from the normal levels of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, and calcium) may lead to convulsions, shock, and other types of metabolic abnormalities. Therefore Cardiac troponin-I and Serum Sodium has been shown to be good predictors of HIE in neonates and has been shown to have a strong correlation with clinical grade of HIE.
