Impact of Age and Gender on ECG Parameters in a Population

Abstract

Introduction: The present study seeks to study the normal range and abnormalities of basic electrocardiography measurements within a large adult population-based study. An exhaustive comprehension of these variances is imperative in improving the diagnosis and treatment modalities related to cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this research is to assess the established ranges and detect deviations in fundamental ECG signals across a substantial adult cohort. Through the analysis of these differences, the research aims to refine the comprehension of ECG data with the impact of gender on the ECG parameters in a population. Methods: This cross-sectional research on patient’s subjects in different age groups starting from 18 years who were randomly selected from the population. After standard 12-lead ECGs were recorded, we estimated basic ECG data such as Heart rate, PR interval, QRS duration, and QT interval intervals. Age- and gender sex-stratified prevalence was analyzed for ECG abnormalities of atrial fibrillation, bundle branch blocks, and ST-T wave alterations. A statistical analysis was performed using statistical softwares. Results: The study found significant age- and gender-dependent differences in ECG values and abnormalities. In the current study, males had an elevated heart rate as well as PR interval than females in short time millisecond intervals. There was a direct relationship of age with prolonged QRS duration and QT interval, for men as well as women. In addition, older individuals had higher prevalence for atrial fibrillation, bundle branch blocks and ST abnormalities with male values being higher than the female values for different variables being tested. The differences between the pairs were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Monitoring of heart rhythm in clinical practice in patients may prove out to be an essential parameter by taking gender sex into consideration, the researchers emphasized. These results emphasize the need for sex-specific reference values to enhance CVD risk assessment and prevention.
