Abstract

Phosphatidylcholine is a very important type of phospholipids in nature, and it has significant roles in the production of industrial materials in several sectors, including pharmaceutical, agricultural, and cosmetics, in addition to the food industry. This study has focused on the hydrolysis of phosphatidylcholine (PC) in different solvents; water and ethanol in acidic environments to find the effect of alcoholic environment on the hydrolysis process of this phospholipid. In this work, the hydrolysis reaction of PC has been investigated in the presence of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and ethanol (CH3CH2OH). The experiments were carried out in inert environment (in presence of N2 as inert gas) using the Schlenk line technique to avoid the oxidative stresses. The data of ultraviolet/visible (UV. /Vis.) and infrared (IR) spectra were analysed using Origin 2019 software. Furthermore, all products were isolated and characterised using UV/Vis., FTIR, NMR spectrophotometers. The results showed that the hydrolysis of PC in both solvents undergoes the same mechanism of the reaction. The study has shown that there is clearly impacted on the products of the hydrolysis of phosphatidylcholine when using ethanol as a solvent
