Abstract

This study evaluates the per se performance of various genotypes and their hybrids in brinjal (Solanum melongena L.), focusing on vegetative and reproductive traits. Conducted over two Kharif seasons (2022-23 and 2023-24) at the Acharya Narendra Deva University of Agriculture and Technology, the research utilized a diallel mating design, excluding reciprocals, to cross ten parental lines, yielding 45 F1 hybrids. The trial, set in a humid, sub-tropical climate with sandy loam soil, involved assessing traits such as plant height, number of branches, leaf area, days to flowering and fruit picking, fruit dimensions, and yield per plant. The study aimed to analyze Per se performance of different genotypes and their hybrids for vegetative and reproductive traits in brinjal. Based on the findings of the experiment conducted it may be suggested that crosses P1 × P3, P3 × P6 and P7 × P8 shows the most top hybrids in order of merit for yield potentiality and can also be commercially exploited. Results indicate significant variability among genotypes and hybrids, with implications for breeding programs focused on enhancing yield and other desirable traits in brinjal
