RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COMPLETE BLOOD COUNT PARAMETERS AND GLYCEMIC CONTROL IN PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES IN A TERTIARY CARE CENTRE

Abstract

Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a global pandemic. The majority of the complications of DM are due to persistent hyperglycemia. HbA1C gives a reliable measure of chronic hyperglycemia and also correlates well with micro and macrovascular complications of DM. Persistent elevation of HbA1C can be associated with hemoglobin structural changes and changes in the red cells. These structural changes can be reflected in the red cell indices of the complete blood count (CBC). Materials and methods: 67 known diabetic patients were studied. Based on the HbA1C values they were divided into 2 groups. The association between HbA1C, CBC parameters and diabetic complications was analyzed. Results: In this study, the mean values of Hb, HCT, MCV, and MCH were lower in T2DM patients with HbA1c >7 suggesting that diabetics with uncontrolled HbA1c levels are prone to develop mild anemia. In the present study, HCT and MCV showed a statistically significant correlation with diabetic neuropathy. MCV, RDW, and WBC count showed statistical significance with diabetic vasculopathy. HCT showed a positive correlation with diabetic ulcers. Conclusion: The findings of the study suggest that some of the CBC parameters could be a useful tool for the early detection of complications of DM thus reducing mortality and morbidity due to the same.
