Study on Narrow Area Testing of Some Promising Potato Lines/Varieties for Fresh Consumption and Processing

Abstract

Potatoes are widely grown worldwide as an essential food crop, with an annual output of hundreds of millions of tons. This study aims to evaluate and propose new potato lines/varieties that show great potential in terms of yield, resistance to viral diseases and late blight as well as high dry content and quality suitable for fresh consumption and processing. The research results from the narrow-scale testing of these promising potato lines/varieties in the Northern and Central Highlands provinces have led to the selection of 7 out of 9 varieties with a high average yield potential (> 21 tons/ha) during testing. Compared to the control variety Atlantic, the yield for these lines/varieties was only slightly lower at > 19 tons/ha, which was statistically significant at the LSD0.05 level. These lines/varieties possess agro-biological and morphological characteristics such as oval and round-oval tubers, yellow tuber skin and flesh color, shallow tuber eye depth, semi-erect plant form, and a high growth rate. The levels of pests and diseases ranged from non-infected to mildly infected, with minimal impact on growth, development, and seed yield potential while maintaining good quality. Further evaluation and testing of these varieties in different ecological regions are ongoing in order to draw accurate conclusions about their potential for mass production in the processing industry
