Termite Gut Microbiome and Its Role in Lignocellulose Degradation

Abstract

This review explores the potential of utilizing termite gut microbiota for the pretreatment of agricultural wastes. The main goal is to develop an efficient, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective method for managing lignocellulosic biomass. However, its complex and recalcitrant nature poses significant challenges to efficient biodegradation and conversion. It discusses the role of various gut compartments and the synergistic actions of resident microorganisms. Key microbial genera involved in cellulose and hemicellulose breakdown are discussed, along with the enzymatic pathways involved in plant polysaccharides. The review also examines the metabolic pathways of sugar fermentation and methanogenesis. The role of methanogens in hydrogen removal and methane production is examined, emphasizing the importance of cross feeding interactions among microbial species. By harnessing the natural capabilities of termite associated microorganisms, this approach addresses the challenges posed by conventional pretreatment methods, contributing to sustainable agricultural waste management practices.
