INTRODUCTION: The skin is a potential marker of gestation and a source of determining the age of the developing fetus. It is a prime barrier of the human body from the external environment serving the function of protection. Materials & Methods: A total of 24 aborted fetal specimens of 13 to 36 weeks of age were collected from the Government Maternity Hospital Tirupathi and were embalmed with 10% formalin and the skin parameters on the lower limb and abdomen were measured using a Paquimeter, histological features of appendages in the skin at different gestational ages were noted Results: There was a significant increase in skin thickness from group 1 to group 4 in the leg, sole, and abdomen. The skin of the thigh showed a significant p-value in epidermal thickness. Histological studies revealed the development of various appendages of the skin at different gestational ages. Conclusion: Data on skin thickness is useful for skin grafting techniques, plastic surgeries, and future diagnostic purposes. The knowledge of skin anatomy is useful to know various congenital skin disorders like Ectodermal dysplasia which are characterized by the abnormal development of one or several ectoderm-derived tissues. Prenatal diagnosis of this condition has been reported earlier in high-risk pregnancies based on histologic analysis of fetal skin within the second trimester through fetoscopy-guided skin biopsy.
