Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of Hyperuricemia in patients with Hypertension and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) from Sir Sundar Lal Hospital, Department of General Medicine, BHU, Varanasi, UP. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out from June to December 2023 to evaluate blood uric acid levels in patients diagnosed with hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus. A systematic sample of 102 patients was included. Data was collected through structured interviews, covering anthropometric measurements, biochemical parameters, and demographic characteristics. Statistical analysis was performed to examine the relationship between hyperuricemia and other relevant variables, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05 Results: The statistical analysis shows that the prevalence of Hyperuricemia in patients with Hypertension and type 2 Diabetes Mellitus found to be 44.1% in males and 55.9% in females with a mean age of 50.32±8.49 years. However, Hyperuricemia is found to be common among rural resident females aged 46–55 years. Determinant variables for Hyperuricemia in T2DM include BMI (p-value = 0.104), residence (p-value = 0.037), education (p-value = 0.331), dietary preferences (p-value = 0.044) and family history of Hyperuricemia with T2DM (p-value = 0.669). Conclusion: This study reveals that patients with Hypertension and T2DM have a significant prevalence of Hyperuricemia. Those patients with high fasting glucose levels, high diastolic blood pressure, smoking, alcohol and oral tobacco chewing are more likely to have Hyperuricemia. Results show that it is very essential to promote awareness about healthy diet choices, lifestyle changes and early identification of Hyperuricemia in Hypertension and T2DM patients.
