Betel leaf (Piper betle L.) var. is an essential oil (EO) rich plant belongs to Piperaceace family used as traditional herbal medicine. The extraction of EO from fresh and cured betel leaves is of high interest for industrial application. Thus, the present study was aimed to optimize the EO extraction yield and its physicochemical characterisation. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis revealed major and minor volatile compounds, representing. iso safrole, iso eugenol, germacerene, cymen-7-ol, anethole and cryophyllene were found to be highly abundant in all three essential oil originated from different geographical places i.e. Medinipur, Patna, Chennai; of India with different percentages. Betel leaf EO of different geographical places showed significantly changes in their yield and properties.
