VITAMIN D AS A POTENTIAL MARKER OF METABOLIC AND ENDOCRINE HEALTH IN POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME

Abstract

Background- The prevalence of hypovitaminosis-D has risen in developed countries over the past few years due to lifestyle changes and increased unhealthy habits. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a group of endocrine disorders that commonly affect women during reproductive age, characterized by irregular, anovulatory menstrual cycles, features of hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovaries. Multiple metabolic and endocrinal derangements have been described in patients with PCOS. It is also noted that there is an association of low serum vitamin-D levels with Metabolic syndrome and high prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Women with PCOS. This study was aided by the fact that it is still unclear which parameters are affected by vitamin-D levels. Material and Methods: A Case-control study was conducted on 30 newly diagnosed PCOS Patients and 30 Healthy women as Controls. Fasting blood samples were collected and analysed for vitamin-D, Metabolic Parameters (Plasma Blood Glucose, Lipid Profile), and Hormonal Parameters (Serum LH, Serum FSH, Serum Fasting Insulin). The data was analysed using SPSS software. Results: Hypovitaminosis-D was observed in the majority of PCOS patients. A Negative correlation of vitamin-D levels with HOMA-IR, LH:FSH ratio, and lipid profile parameters was found except for serum HDL cholesterol, which showed a positive correlation. Conclusion: Hypovitaminosis-D is very common and exacerbates the metabolic and Hormonal derangements in PCOS patients. It is essential to screen all PCOS patients for Vitamin-D levels, and appropriate replacement therapy should be provided to prevent adverse consequences.
