Abstract

Introduction: Low backache (LBA) is one of the most common medical problems, with 70- 80% of adults experiencing it at some point in their lives (1). The most common cause of LBA is intervertebral degeneration, which leads to degenerative disc disease and lumbar disc herniation (LDH). Aims: To evaluate and to determine the association between the clinical findings and the MRI findings in LDH Materials & Methods: Study was conducted in department of orthopaedics, AJIMS. 61 patients with LBA were included in this study; they were evaluated clinically with modified JOA score and ODI and radiologically with MRI. Patients diagnosed with LDH were included in this study and treated conservatively with traction and bed rest, epidural steroid injection and surgically with decompression and followed up for a period of 6 months. Patients presenting with recurrent symptoms were evaluated with a repeat MRI. Result: The MRI findings on first visit shows, majority of the patients 28(45.9%) had protrusion followed by 25(41%) patients had bulge and 8(13.1%) had extrusion. Among 28 protrusion cases, 10(16.4%) were with L4-L5 disc protrusion.
