Anticonvulsant Activity of Hydrolic Leaves Extract of Malvastrumcoromandelianum (L.) on Rats

Abstract

Epilepsy is a chronic central nervous system illness characterized by frequent, spontaneous seizures. The primary trigger for seizures is excitatory or inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (EPSP, IPSP), which depolarize nerve cell membranes. A study investig ated the effects of Malvastrumcoromandelianum (L.), a common plant leaf, on mood responses and antidepressant behaviour in rats. The extracts contained alkaloids, proteins, flavonoids, phytosterol, saponin, and tannins, but were found to be lacking in fixe d oil, fats, glycosides, and carbohydrates. The animals were kept in a close wall glass cylinder like apparatus and allowed to move freely. The results showed significant reductions in lipid peroxidation in the brain tissue of the rats compared to the cont rol group. The hydrolic extract of Malvastrumcoromandelianum (L.) (HEMC) showed a significant decrease in malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration when compared to the control group. The study suggests that the extracts may have potential as an antidepressant.
