Assessment of Ground Water Quality for Natural Resources Disaster Management: A Model Study

Abstract

Groundwater in urban areas worldwide is rapidly depleting, posing a significant threat of scarcity for future generations. This alarming trend is driven by uncontrolled and unpredictable population growth, exacerbated by rural-to-urban migration. Concurrently, the available groundwater is becoming increasingly contaminated due to unsound management practices. Continuous extraction from specific points has led to the intrusion of pollutants into underground aquifers. Additionally, the release of chemicals and other contaminants onto the open ground and into nearby water bodies has further aggravated groundwater pollution. These factors collectively underscore the urgent need for sustainable groundwater management to safeguard this vital resource for the future. In any region, effective groundwater management primarily hinges on the volume of water extracted to meet the local population's needs, the rate of pumping, and the availability of groundwater recharge facilities. Additionally, it involves the implementation of regulatory policies devised by the local community to safeguard groundwater resources. These elements collectively determine the sustainability and long-term availability of groundwater in the area. In the present study we have selected 8 sampling locations at zone Nallapadu, Guntur Municipal Corporation. All groundwater samples were collected from boreholes and hand pumps. Water Quality Analysis has been carried out to find out the basic nature of water quality with limited water influencing parameters such as pH, Color, EC, Turbidity, Chlorides, Fluorides, Nitrates, Calcium hardness, Total Hardness, Total Alkalinity and Iron by adopting standard analytical procedures. After analysis results were correlated with IS: 10500-2012waterqualitystandardsto find out the existed scenario of ground water quality at study area. By using remote sensing and Geographical Information System the spatial distribution maps were prepared.
