Aim: The present study was conducted to assess the periodontal status and physical as well as psychological nicotine dependence among tobacco users attending out-patient department of Teerthanker Mahaveer Dental College and Research Centre, Moradabad. Methods: A total of 1000 tobacco users were studied among which 500 were smokers and 500 were smokeless tobacco users. Pre-structured questionnaires were used for assessment of physical and psychological nicotine dependence and modified WHO 2013 proforma was used to record periodontal status. Data was analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Results: Prevalence of tobacco usage was found to be higher in males as compared to females. A significant association was found between different forms of tobacco used and oral hygiene aids. The difference in the nicotine dependence and gingival bleeding, periodontal status was significant in both the categories of tobacco users. Conclusions: The increasing rate of tobacco usage shifts the burden of health from the public health systems to personal individual level. Governmental along with non-governmental organizations should co-ordinate with each other to ensure the continuity of tobacco cessation programs.
