In the present study, eighteen soil samples collected from various crop fields of five hoblis, viz., Hettur, Belagodu, Hanbal, Yeslur, Alur, and Sakaleshpur, were studied for the diversity of edaphic algae by liquid and moist culture methods. The eighteen soil samples collected were broadly categorized into six groups based on coloration, namely, red, brown, black, black brown, brown clay, and light brown sandy. A total of 97 algal species belonging to 44 genera were recorded, out of which 57 were Cyanophyceae members, 24 algae were Chlorophyceae members, 14 algae belonged to Bacillariophyceae, and 2 of them were Euglenophyceae members. It was observed that brown soil showed the maximum number of algae, i.e., 46, recorded, and a minimum of 23 was observed in light brown sandy soil. The results provide evidence that the abundance and biodiversity of edaphic algae depend on geographical areas and environmental factors. The present study is the first report on the edaphic algae of Sakaleshpura Taluk, Hassan district, Karnataka, India.
