Can Dynamic Presepsin Level Predict Mortality in Sepsis Better Than Changes in SOFA Score? – A Prospective Study

Abstract

Background: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body improperly responds to infection, leading to organ dysfunction and failure. In 2017, sepsis resulted in 11 million deaths worldwide. One of the biomarkers that can be used for assessing prognosis in sepsis is presepsin. Presepsin is a subtype of the soluble form of CD14 (sCD14-ST) and plays an important role in activating the innate immune system. Serum presepsin levels taken in the first 24 hours of sepsis patients were significantly higher in the group that died. The prognosis of sepsis can also be assessed using the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA). The higher the SOFA score, the poorer the patient’s prognosis.
