Biogas is produced when microorganisms degrade biological matterials in the absence of oxygen. It is an energy molecule that is made up methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) and some amount of oxygen (O2). The production of biogas from biodegradable materials is carried out by a consortium of microorganisms. Fecal matter of seven selected animals (Cattle, Sheep. Goat, Chicken Pig, Camel and Elephant) were prepared for microbial culture using serial dilution in order to determine the microbial populations involved in biogas production. Thioglycollate broth and Nutrient agar were used as culture media for anaerobic bacteria, while Patato dextrose agar (PDA) was used to culture anaerobic fungi. Microbial identification was done using ‘Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) Biotyper’, and a total of 11 bacterial specicies were identified namely: Bacillus cereus, Acinetobacter baumannii, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus gallolyticus, Enterococcus faecalis, Acinetobacter guillouiae, Enterococcus faecium, Bacillus licheniformis, Kurthia gibsonii, Enterococcus casseliflavus, Cronobacter sp. Also, two fungi species were identified namely: Pichia kudriavzevii and Aspergillus flavus. The study concluded that all the identified microorganisms play vital roles in biogas production with the exception of Acinetobacter baumannii, Kurthia gibsonii, Cronobacter sp. and Pichia kudriavzevii.
