Dengue fever has emerged as one of the fastest growing vector-borne diseases globally, threatening nearly half of the world’s population. Transmitted primarily by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, the disease has become a major public health challenge across tropical and subtropical regions. India, with its vast ecological diversity and dense population, has witnessed recurring outbreaks over the past two decades, with considerable variations in incidence across states and climatic zones. Among the different regions, North East India has increasingly drawn attention due to the frequency and intensity of dengue outbreaks in recent years, coupled with the region’s ecological sensitivity and complex climatic variability. The North East, comprising eight states namely Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim presents unique conditions that make it particularly vulnerable to vector-borne diseases. Geographically, the region is characterized by hilly terrain, river valleys, and dense forest cover. Climatically, it experiences heavy monsoon rainfall, high humidity, and marked seasonal variations. These conditions provide an ideal breeding environment for Aedes mosquitoes, whose life cycles are strongly influenced by rainfall, temperature, and relative humidity. Furthermore, rapid but uneven urbanization, poor waste management, and intermittent water supply systems have created abundant artificial breeding habitats in peri-urban and urban centers. This intersection of natural and anthropogenic factors contributes to the persistence and intensification of dengue transmission
