Abstract

Distal radius fractures are the most common post traumatic fractures in adults encountered in daily practise. There is recent shift in trend towards surgical interventions with the aim to achieve good radiological outcomes post operatively, thereby achieving good final functional outcomes. However, a lacuna exists in respect to whether the post operative radiological parameters are significant in determining the ultimate functional outcome. This study was done in order to investigate the relationship between immediate post operative radiological outcome parameters and final functional outcome. Thirty patients with distal radius fractures treated with volar locking plating from July 2023 to December 2023, with follow up period of 6 months were included in this prospective study. Radiological outcome was assessed using radiological parameters- radial height, radial inclination, volar tilt and ulnar variance in the immediate post operative radiographs. Functional outcome of each patient was assessed based on range of movements of the wrist and forearm- dorsiflexion, palmar flexion, radial deviation, ulnar deviation, pronation, supination, hand grip and quick-DASH scoring at 6 months follow up. The outcome of this study states that there is statistically significant positive correlation existing between the immediate post operative radiological parameters and final functional outcomes. Positive correlation also exists between individual radiological parameters and functional outcomes. Among the radiological parameters, strongest co-relation was demonstrated between ulnar variance and final functional outcome measures.
