Combining ability studies in Bitter Gourd (Momordica charantia L.) for yield and it’s contributing traits.

Abstract

The present study was conducted at the Main Experiment Station (MES) of the Department of Vegetable Science, Acharya Narendra Deva University of Agriculture and Technology, Narendra Nagar, Kumarganj, Ayodhya (U.P.) India during the Zaid seasons of 2022-23 (Y1) and 2023-24 (Y2). Plant material consisted of 30 F1 hybrids and their 13 parents (10 lines and 3 testers) bitter gourd including 1 check namely Sagar (commercial check) in Randomized Block Design (RBD) with three replications in line x tester mating design. The crop was sown in rows spaced at 3 meters apart with a plant to plant spacing of 0.50 meter. Sowing was done on 22 February, 2022-23 and 19 February, 2023- 24. Evaluation was done for different yield and quality traits. On the basis of overall performance the three best crosses were, namely NDBG-35 × Pant Karela-1 (550.78) followed by NDBG-13 × PB-14 (468.86), NDBG-15× PB-15 (358.01), NDBG-26 × PB 14 (354.83) and NDBG-8 × PB-15 (344.58) were found in fruit yield per plant common over the seasons (pooled). Hence could be further evaluated in future breeding programme for their large-scale testing.
