Comparative Clinical Study between Titanium Three-Dimensions Mini Plates versus Stainless Steel Three-Dimensions Mini Plates in Treating Anterior Mandibular Fractures

Abstract

Background: Three Dimensions (3D) plates are quadrangular shape formed by joining two mini-plates with interconnecting crossbars, they provided three dimensional stability and resistance to torsional forces (1) Aims: to compare 3D titanium mini plates and 3D stainless mini plates in terms of anterior mandibular fracture treatment outcomes and prevention of post-operative complications. Materials and Methods: Twenty patients (n = 20) divided randomly into two groups. Group I (n = 10) treated by 2‑mm 3D titanium mini plate Group II (n = 10) treated by 2‑mm 3D stainless steel plates.Postoperatively patients were analysed at the 1st week, 4th, 6th week, 3rd month and 4th month according to Uglesic V scoring system, 1993. Evaluating occlusion, mobility of fracture segment, wound dehiscence, neurological deficit, and infection. Results Titanium plates were easy to adapt and less time consuming. In Group (A) no hardware difficulty in plate adaptation was encountered where as in Group (B), 3 patients (30%) had difficulty of adaptation at symphysis region. There was need of supplemental IMF for 3weeks in five patients. One patient of Group (A) and four patients of Group (B). With regards to Complication Scores, No patient reported any postoperative paresthesia/anesthesia in Group (A) in different period interval. On the other side, two patients in group (B) had soft tissue infection at 1st week. Conclusion: The end result achieved by both the 3D plate systems was equally successful in providing satisfactory osteosynthesis of mandibular fractures.
