COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH AND WEAR RESISTANCE OF NANO-HYBRID COMPOSITES AND GIOMERS

Abstract

Background: Nano-hybrid composites consist of a combination of fine and nano-sized fillers, resulting in a restorative material characterized by enhanced strength, improved polishability, and increased wear resistance.2 These materials have become standard for cosmetic restorations in the posterior region of the mouth, where mechanical stress is significant. Their organic matrices exhibit significant cross linking, and the optimization of filler load contributes to their enhanced compressive strength. Objective: To compare the compressive strength and wear resistance of nano-hybrid resin composites and giomer restorative materials. Methods: Standardized cylindrical and rectangular specimens were fabricated from a nano-hybrid composite and a giomer. Compressive strength was evaluated using a universal testing machine, while wear resistance was assessed using a two-body wear test under simulated masticatory cycles. Data were analyzed using independent t-tests at a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: Nano-hybrid composites demonstrated significantly higher compressive strength and lower volumetric wear compared to giomers. Giomers showed moderate mechanical behavior but exhibited greater wear loss under cyclic loading. Conclusion: Nano-hybrid composites outperform giomers in compressive strength and wear resistance, making them more suitable for stress-bearing posterior restorations, while giomers remain acceptable in low-to-moderate load clinical situations due to their fluoride release and bioactive properties.
