Comprehensive Analysis of Essential Oil from Curcuma angustifolia Roxb. : Chemical Profile, Antioxidant Potential, and Antibacterial Properties

Abstract

Essential oils (EOs) are known for their antioxidant, antiinflammatory and antimicrobial properties. The following study explores the potential therapeutic benefits of Curcuma angustifolia Roxb extracts, a member of Zingiberaceae family known as East Indian arrowroot, native to Western Ghats in Karnataka, India. EOs was extracted via hydro-distillation using a Clevenger-type apparatus. Subsequently, the chemical composition of the EOs was analyzed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), the profiling evaluated 84 notable phytoconstituents, with a R-Turmerone (14.16% peak area) leading the pack, trailed by Benzenebutanal (9.57% peak area), Bornyl tailgate (2.95% peak area), Turmeronol (2.61% peak area), (E)-Atlantone (2.54% peak area), Eucalyptol (1.05% peak area), 14- Hydroxycaryophyllene (1.16% peak area), and 5- Azulenemethanol (1.15% peak area). The EOs exhibited a notable free radical neutralization capacity with an IC-50 value of 80µg/ml against the DPPH model. The antimicrobial activity analysis, revealed that the EOs exhibited a varying degree of efficacy against bacteria, with the greatest impact on Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC29213), followed by Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC29212), and least on Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC27853). The comprehensive bioactive properties of the essential oil extracted from the rhizome of Curcuma angustifolia Roxb. can be attributed to its complex phytochemical content.
