Abstract

Cancer, a complex and multifaceted disease, arises from the uncontrolled growth of cells and is a leading cause of mortality worldwide. This review provides a comprehensive overview of cancer, starting with its basic pathology and historical background, tracing the evolution of our understanding from early medical texts to modern scientific breakthroughs. The discussion covers the chemistry of cancer, including the role of DNA mutations, oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, and the body's repair mechanisms. Cancer epidemiology is explored, highlighting risk factors, global incidence patterns, and the importance of early detection. Current trends in cancer treatment are analyzed, with a focus on personalized medicine, genomics, and the integration of artificial intelligence in diagnostics. Emerging therapies, such as targeted treatments, nanotechnology, and phytoconstituents, are examined for their potential to revolutionize cancer care. Additionally, the review addresses the challenges and opportunities in translating these innovations from the laboratory to clinical practice. The role of technology, such as robotic surgery and wearable devices, in improving patient outcomes is also discussed. Finally, the future directions of cancer research, particularly the integration of phyto-constituents with conventional therapies and immunotherapy, are explored, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices in sourcing medicinal plants. This review underscores the ongoing advancements in cancer research and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to tackling this formidable disease.
