The main goal of creating an institutional repository is to boost the visibility of the institution's research by making it easily available to everyone at no cost.University libraries are increasingly managing digital academic materials and engaging with the changing scholarly communication environment through these repositories. However, the full development of institutional repositories is lacking in some educational settings. This can be attributed to instances where librarians responsible for these repositories are not fully aware of their role and lack the necessary skills for implementation.This paper discusses a study carried out on the engagement of libraries in the establishment and population of institutional repositories within fourteen state universities in Kerala. The research methodology used in the study was a descriptive survey.Information for this investigation was collected using a well-structured questionnaire, information from websites, and a literature review. All the librarians at the university took part in this survey. Simple statistical methods were used in the study to analyze the data. The study’s conclusions demonstrate that ten of fourteen state universities have Institutional repositoriesand that digital information is distributed and stored using the software D-space. The two major barriers to implementing recent technologies in libraries were the lack of funds and lack of training for library staff to use these technologies and the need to maintain and upgrade digital infrastructure.This research uncovered that progress in technology frequently simplifies library operations, The state libraries in Kerala are moving into a new phase of the IT revolution, where web-based applications are used for everyday library functions.
