Design and Evaluation of Enteric-Coated Synbiotic Systems for Enhanced Probiotic Using Novel Prebiotic Delivery

Abstract

Design of a delivery systems that release probiotics specifically in the colon to maximize their therapeutic effects a targeted approach can potentially improve therapeutic outcomes compared to systemic or less specific delivery methods. An attempt was made to design and develop a synbiotic delivery system by using Eudragit L-100 and Eudragit E 100 as coating materials to enhance the viability of probiotic cells in the core. Prebiotic material was extracted from banana bract, agave leaves, and orange peel. After evaluation, prebiotic potency was evaluated positively with all three extracts against Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Bifidobacteria bifidum, and Bifidobacteria lactis. Lactobacillus strains showed a positive response and were thus used for the formulation development. Cell viability after formulation, and cell release in the gastric and intestinal pH showed positive outcomes. In vivo, studies can be performed as part of the future scope of the present research work
