Effect of Aloe Vera, Propolis and Pomegranate Extract Mouth Washes on Salivary pH and Antibacterial Activity in High Caries Risk Patients: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial

Abstract

Aim: Assessment of salivary pH and antibacterial activity of Aloe vera, Propolis and Pomegranate mouthwashes in high caries risk patients. Materials and Methods: A total of 40 high caries risk participants were selected and divided randomly into four groups, according to the mouth wash used; Group M1: Aloe Vera mouthwash, group M2: Propolis mouthwash, group M3: Pomegranate mouthwash and group M4: Saline. Salivary sample was collected from all participants immediately before mouthwash usage (baseline) and after 3 different evaluation time 1, 2 and 3 months. The pH of the collected saliva and streptococcus mutans bacterial count for all participants at all evaluation times were assessed. The salivary pH was recorded using pH meter while the bacterial count was detected by culturing in Mitis Salivarius Agar. All data were statistical analyzed using ANOVA/ Kruskal-Wallis. Results: Regarding intergroup comparison, there was no statistically significant difference in baseline pH readings between all groups. While, a statistically significant increase in salivary pH value was recorded at different evaluation time between different mouthwashes. Concerning the bacterial count, a statistically significant differences were recorded at different evaluation time in the whole mouthwashes with an effective decrease in the bacterial count. Conclusion: Aloe Vera, Propolis and Pomegranate could be considered as natural alternatives mouthwashes for caries prevention in high caries risk patient.
