Effect of Combining Kinesiotaping to Functional Electrical Stimulation on Shoulder Subluxation in Stroke Patients

Abstract

INTRODUCTION. Glenohumeral joint subluxation (GHS) is a common complication in patients with post-stroke hemiplegia. AIM.The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of combining kinesiotaping (KTape) with functional electrical stimulation (FES) in addition to traditional physical therapy (TPT) on the radiological degree of shoulder subluxation (SS), shoulder pain, active range of motion (AROM), and functional performance in this patient population. SUBJECTS AND METHODS. Forty patients of both genders diagnosed with SS were randomly assigned to either the experimental group (A), which received FES, TPT, and KTape, or the control group (C), which received FES, TPT, and a sham KTape. The interventions were conducted over 12 sessions (3 sessions per week) for four weeks. The outcomes were assessed pre-and post-intervention using an X-ray to measure SS magnitude, the Getmyrom mobile application to measure shoulder active flexion and abduction ROM, the Ritchie articular index (RAI) to assess pain intensity, and the upper limb motor assessment scale (UL-MAS) questionnaire to measure the functional performance of the subluxed shoulder. RESULTS. Both groups showed significant improvement in all measured variables post-treatment compared to pretreatment (P<0.05). The between-group analysis indicated no significant differences between the two groups, except for active shoulder flexion range of motion. DISCUSSION. While the effectiveness of KTape on stroke patients with SS did not show a significant difference, there was a significant disparity in shoulder flexion range of motion. CONCLUSION. KTape may be considered anadjunctive therapeutic approach for stroke patients with SS.
