Abstract

Strawberries are a new crop introduced recently that has gained its space mainly in the central and northern part of the province of Chimborazo. However, given the lack of knowledge of producers about the proper management of irrigation in strawberry cultivation that has resulted in the irrational use of water, the research was carried out in the Pungal El Quinche sector, belonging to the Guano canton, in a soil with a sandy loam texture. The objective was to evaluate the effect of four irrigation sheets on strawberry cultivation (Fragaria sp "Albión Californiana"), using a drip irrigation system. A randomized whole block experimental (DBCA) design was used with four treatments and five replications. The treatments were made up of four irrigation sheets that corresponded to a percentage of 80%, 90%, 100% and 110% of the crop evapotranspiration (ETc) that was calculated through the PETP V 2.0.0 software, which uses the Hargreaves formula based on temperature based on climatic parameters obtained from nearby meteorological stations and spatially interpolated with a digital elevation model (altitudinal gradient) by means of the IDW method (Inverse Distance Weighted) of the GIS. The irrigation sheet of 110% of the crop evapotranspiration presented the highest plant height and the best results at 172 and 179 days after transplanting for the variables corresponding to fruit length, fruit weight per plant, individual fruit weight and with a yield of 7530.54 kg/ha and 8264.22 kg/ha respectively; which confirms that the application of a high irrigation layer in a sandy soil is essential to obtain good vigor and development of the plants, which allows obtaining high productivitys and an excellent quality of the harvested fruit.
