Effect on the culture of the copepod Apocyclops aff. spartinus fed with the microalga Diacronema lutheri, and the fungi Schizochytrium sp and Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Abstract

This study evaluated the effect of the copepod Apocyclops aff. spartinus fed with the microalga Diacronema lutheri, the fungus Schizochytrium sp. and the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The experiments were carried out for three weeks, monitoring physicochemical parameters of the culture, including density, salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen (O₂), pH and luminosity. At the end of the experiment, lipid and fatty acid analysis was performed. Copepods fed with D. lutheri had an average content of 565.37 µg/g of C22:6n-3 (DHA) and 116.51 µg/g of C20:5n-3 (EPA). With Schizochytrium sp., the values were 646.98 µg/g of DHA and 281.92 µg/g of EPA. In contrast, those fed S. cerevisiae showed significantly lower values: 0.84 µg/g of DHA and 0.17 µg/g of EPA. The average O₂ and pH values in the cultures also varied depending on the feed: with D. lutheri, the average O₂ was 4.7 mg/L and pH 8; with S. cerevisiae, the average O₂ was 3.9 mg/L and pH 7.5; and with Schizochytrium sp., the average O₂ was 3.8 mg/L and pH 7.2. The highest population density was observed in cultures fed D. lutheri, reaching an average of 4,299 organisms/L. From a nutritional perspective, D. lutheri and Schizochytrium sp. stood out as the best feeds for the copepods. However, D. lutheri showed superior performance in population density compared to the other two food sources.
