Effectiveness of Propolis in the Treatment of Periodontal Disease: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Objective : Periodontal disease encompasses gingivitis and periodontitis and is one of the most common chronic infections in the adult population. Propolis is an anti-inflammatory because containt CAPE (Caffeic Acid Phenetyl Ester) and natural substance produced by bees which has proven useful for treating periodontal disease. The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate effectiveness of propolis in the treatment of periodontal disease Methods : Electronic literature searches were conducted 2013 to 2022 using the following database PubMed, Wiley and Sciencedirect using term limited to randomized control clinical trials in English using the PICOS format. Clinical parameters included changes in, Pocket Depth (PD), Cnical Attachment Loss and bleeding on probing (BOP). Results: The research is conducted to identified all full articles and were done manualy from 289 articles, there were 39 articles found in accordence with the tittle and abstract, and only out of which 7 articles were selected for full- text assessment. Finally ,6 articles were selected for detailed evaluation for this systematic review. Conclusion: Propolis is safe to use and becames an alternative treatment option for periodontitis during non-surgical periodontal disease treatment, reducing probing pocket depth.
