Female African giant rat (FAGR) fertility is jeopardised in captivity. This study aimed at evaluating the effects of ethanolic extract of Senecio biafrae on FAGR reproductive characteristics in captivity. After evidencing sperm cells in vaginal smears, mated females were assigned into 4 groups of 10 animals each. Group 1 (control) received 10 g of tendered avocado only, while groups 2, 3 and 4 received 50, 100 and 150 mg/Kg bw of S. biafrae ethanolic extract respectively; blended with same quantity of tendered avocado. Treatment started on day 1 and ended on day 21 post mating. Thereafter, 5 animals were sacrificed for blood and organ sampling while the others were followed up till birth. Corpus luteum number and litter size increased significantly (P˂ 0.05) in animals treated with 100 mg/Kg bw plant extract compared to control. Number of implantation sites, percentage of live embryos and fertile mating rate increased significantly (P˂ 0.05) in rats treated with 100 and 150 mg/Kg bw S. biafrae ethanolic extract compared to control. Rate of pre and post implantation losses reduced significantly (P˂ 0.05) in groups treated with 100 and 150 mg/Kg bw compared to control. In conclusion, treatment of FAGR with ethanolic extract of S. biafrae at doses of 100 and 150 mg/Kg bw improved reproductive characteristics.
