Effects of year and number of weedings on agronomic parameters of carrots in the Faranah region of Guinea

Abstract

This study evaluated the combined effect of the year of production and the number of weeding operations on the agronomic performance of carrots (Daucus carota L.) in the Faranah region of Guinea. The design used was a randomized complete block design with four levels of weeding performed at ten-day intervals starting on the 15th day after sowing: zero weeding (SB0); One weeding (SB1); two weedings (SB2) and three weedings (SB3) repeated three t imes. The data, collected over two seasons (2023 and 2024), and the number of weedings were analyzed using two-factor ANOVA followed by Tukey's test. The results showed that the crop year and the number of weeding significantly influenced the average plant height, average root length and diameter, average root weight per m², as well as adjusted agricultural and gross yields. The interaction between the two factors was significant only for adjusted gross yield. Among all treatments over the two years, the SB3 variant consistently showed the best agronomic performance, with roots averaging 15.60 cm in length in 2023 and 8.16 cm in diameter in 2024. In 2023, this same SB3 variant produced the highest root weight per square meter (3.57 kg/m²), the highest agricultural and biological yields (35.55 T/ha and 46.68 T/ha), and in 2024, the adjusted biological yield averaged 17.19 T/ha. In contrast, the SBO variant, which received no hoeing, produced the lowest values in all years of cultivation. These results highlight the importance of regular hoeing adapted to annual conditions in order to optimize carrot production in this region.
