EMERGING BIOMARKERS FOR EARLY IDENTIFICATION OF ACUTE KIDNEY INJURY IN CRITICALLY ILL PATIENTS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Abstract

Objective: This systematic review aims to determine the findings on novel biomarkers for the early diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) in critically ill patients. AKI remains a critical issue in Intensive Care Units (ICU) as it affects a significant proportion of patients and is associated with severe outcomes. Background: Conventional laboratory tests often fail to diagnose AKI in its early stages, emphasizing the need for modern biomarkers. New developments in biomarker studies focusing on the early diagnosis of AKI offer potential improvements in managing this condition in ICU settings. Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted to identify emerging biomarkers for the early diagnosis of AKI in critically ill patients. Studies were evaluated based on diagnostic accuracy, clinical applicability, and relevance in various critical care scenarios. Emphasis was placed on identifying biomarkers that have gained attention in recent research and hold promise for use in time-sensitive clinical settings. Results: The review indicates that a few novel biomarkers show potential in improving early AKI diagnosis. However, there are significant variations in study characteristics and the performance of these biomarkers, which highlights the need for standardized protocols and further validation. Conclusion: While novel biomarkers may provide better value in the early diagnosis of AKI, inconsistencies in research methods and biomarker performance call for further studies. Future research should focus on larger, multicenter trials and investigate how these biomarkers can be integrated into clinical practice to improve patient outcomes in critical care.
