Background: Rheumatoid arthritis is a debilitating autoimmune disease predominantly affecting the joints, leading to chronic inflammation, pain, and progression of joint damage. Rheumatoid arthritis is manipulated by many environmental factors including exposure to silica dust, other chemicals, microbial infections, smoking, and hormonal influences have been implicated in triggering and exacerbating rheumatoid arthritis in susceptible individuals, particularly during critical periods of the immune system. Objective: The study aims to determine the early biomarkers of rheumatoid arthritis(RA) by using CBC variables including RDW(Red cell distribution width) and Leukocyte count. Methodolgy: A retrospective study analysis was conducted on CBC data from diagnosed patients of RA and a control group without RA.150 individuals were selected for leukocyte count and RDW was compared with the control group. Statistical analysis included descriptive statics, t-tests, and receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis for indicating the sensitivity and specificity of RDW and leukocyte count for early detection of RA. Results: It is expected that RA patients exhibit predominantly higher RDW and leukocyte counts as compared to controls. The mean RDW in RA patients is 15.4%, predominantly higher than the control group(p<0.01). The mean leukocyte count in RA patients is 11,000cells/uL 6,000uL in controls (p<0.01)There is a significant positive correlation between RDW and DAS28(r=0.45,p<0.01) and between leukocyte count and DAS28(r=0.50,p<0.01). Conclusion: RDW and leukocytosis may be conducted as significant early indicators for RA, potentially contributing to earlier intervention-improved patient outcomes. The study could enhance diagnostic accuracy and aid in the management of RA.
